Women are particularly impacted by climate change

Since many years, genanet has been critisising the lack of women's voices in the UNFCCC negotiations, although they are the ones especially impacted by climate change. Now the activities organised by genanet are beginning to bearing inital fruits. In a discussion with environmental NGOs, Germany's Environmental Minister Gabriel mentioned the urgency of concrete agreements and easy accessable funds helping to increase the access to energy for the rural population in Africa, especially for women, and helping to mitigate climate change. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan highlighted in his touching speech the special impacts of climate change on women and ended his contribution by pointing out, that „the question is not whether climate change is happening, but whether, in the face of this emergency, we ourselves can change fast enough.“ genanet/LIFE organised regular women's meetings during the UNFCCC conference, a side event and an information booth. All of them were stimulating discussions among participants interested in gender issues, resulting in positions and documents. You can access these at the UNFCCC page of our website.
